VA Aid & Attendance Eligibility Screener
A 90-second tool to estimate whether you or a loved one may qualify for the VA pension benefit that helps pay for home care.
Who is care needed for?
A&A is for the veteran or surviving spouse. Choose the relationship to the veteran.
Did the veteran serve at least 90 days on active duty?
Active duty means full-time federal military service (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force). Reserve or National Guard alone usually does not count unless activated to federal service for 90+ days.
Did at least ONE day of that service fall during a recognized wartime period?
VA wartime periods include:
- World War II: Dec 7, 1941 – Dec 31, 1946
- Korean War: Jun 27, 1950 – Jan 31, 1955
- Vietnam Era: Aug 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975 (Feb 28, 1961 if served in Vietnam)
- Gulf War / Post-9/11: Aug 2, 1990 – present (still ongoing)
What was the discharge character?
A&A requires a discharge other than dishonorable. Honorable and general-under-honorable-conditions both qualify.
Does the veteran or surviving spouse need help with daily activities?
A&A requires need for help with at least ONE of: bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring (getting in/out of bed or chair), or being legally blind, bedridden, or living in a nursing home or assisted living facility.
Is the household's net worth under $163,699?
For 2026, the VA net worth limit is $163,699 (effective Dec 1, 2025 – Nov 30, 2026). Net worth includes savings, investments, and other assets but excludes:
- Your primary residence (the home you live in)
- One personal vehicle
- Personal belongings
